Why tree work is hard on EWPs

The arborist's working environment is uniquely demanding. Machines are routinely set up off level and on unimproved ground, placing eccentric loads on outriggers, slew rings and boom structures. The dynamic shock of cutting and dropping timber transmits impact loads that accumulate as structural fatigue. Sap, moisture and organic debris promote corrosion and foul hydraulic and pivot components. Insulated units and work near power lines

A large share of urban tree work occurs near overhead electrical assets, and arborists frequently use insulated EWPs to work safely in the vicinity of live conductors. Where a unit is insulated, its protective value depends on the dielectric integrity of the boom, which must be tested rather than assumed. Standards and inspection cadence

Arborist cherry pickers and spider lifts are inspected against AS 1418.10 for design and used in accordance with AS 2550.10. Routine and log book servicing follows the manufacturer's intervals, an annual inspection confirms ongoing compliance, and a major inspection is required at ten years from manufacture and at defined intervals thereafter. Given the severe duty of tree work, we pay particular attention to boom and outrigger welds, often recommending non-destructive testing on high-hour units where visual inspection alone is not sufficient to characterise fatigue.

A unit that reaches its ten-year milestone without a completed major inspection cannot lawfully be used, which for a small contractor with one or two machines means the entire business stops. We flag these milestones well ahead so they can be planned around quieter periods.

Functional testing of stability and safety systems

The safety systems that keep an arborist upright at height — outrigger interlocks, level sensing, load limiting, emergency lowering and controls — must be proven, not presumed. Functional testing at each inspection confirms these systems operate correctly, which matters enormously on machines routinely set up on ground that tests their stability envelope.
