Mobile cranes are self-propelled slewing cranes, ranging from compact rough-terrain and city cranes to large all-terrain and truck-mounted units capable of lifting hundreds of tonnes. Their combination of a telescopic or lattice boom, a slewing superstructure and a mobile carrier makes them among the most capable and the most safety-critical lifting machines on any site. This page sets out how our engineers inspect and certify them against AS 1418.5 and AS 2550.5.
The most safety-critical lifting machines on site
A mobile crane can lift very large loads at long radius, and a failure of any element in its load path, from the hook block to the outrigger pad, can have catastrophic consequences. For this reason mobile crane inspection is a disciplined, engineering-led process that examines the boom, slew, hoist, safety devices and stability base as a single integrated system, with the load chart and configuration data tying them together.
Because these cranes are frequently reconfigured with different boom lengths, jibs and counterweights, the inspection also confirms that the load-moment system correctly reflects the configuration in use, since an incorrect setting would allow an unsafe lift.
Boom, slew and superstructure
On telescopic cranes we inspect the boom sections, wear pads and extension system; on lattice cranes we examine the chords, lacings, connection pins and any signs of distortion or corrosion. The boom-head sheaves and their bearings are checked, along with the slew ring, slew drive and the attachment of the counterweight to the superstructure.
The slew ring is a defining component, and its tilt and bolt condition are measured, because it carries the entire lifting moment into the carrier.
Hoist, ropes and rigging
The hoist system is a direct link to the load. We inspect hoist ropes for broken wires, wear and corrosion, examine drums and their grooving, verify brake performance, and check hook blocks, safety latches and rigging. Where age or duty warrants, non-destructive testing is applied to the hook and other critical items.
Outriggers, stability and safety devices
A mobile crane's rated capacity depends on its outriggers being deployed to a defined spread on adequate ground. We inspect the outrigger beams, jacks and pads, confirm the outrigger monitoring and the load-moment indicator, and verify the rated-capacity limiter prevents lifts that would exceed the load chart for the current configuration.
Anti-two-block devices, boom-angle and length sensing, and hoist limits are all function-tested, as these are the safeguards that keep the crane within its safe envelope.
Load testing, major inspection and certification
Load testing verifies the crane performs at rated capacity and that its overload and stability systems intervene correctly. At the intervals set by AS 2550.5, a major inspection examines structural and mechanical components in depth, including non-destructive testing of the boom, hook and other fatigue-critical items.
Our engineering report documents every inspection and test result, the condition of the structure and safety systems, and the certification outcome, giving the operator a defensible record of the crane's fitness for continued service.
