How we test insulation
Testing applies controlled test voltages across the insulating section under conditions defined by the machine's rating and the applicable standard, measuring leakage current and dielectric performance. The boom is prepared and cleaned so the result reflects the insulation's true condition rather than surface contamination, and the test is conducted with strict controls to protect personnel and equipment.
We also examine the insulating section for surface tracking, cracking and contamination that can compromise performance, and we verify any liner or platform insulation the machine relies upon.
Categories and ratings
Insulated EWPs are rated for defined voltage categories, and the test regime reflects the category the machine is used within. We confirm the machine still meets its rated category and flag where a machine no longer performs to the rating on its plate, which is a common finding on older units.
How often and when
Dielectric testing is performed periodically and after any event that could affect insulation, such as contact damage or major repair. Utilities and line contractors typically test on a defined cycle to maintain continuous confidence in their insulated fleet.
Reporting
The report records the test voltages, measured performance, the category verified and a clear pass or the actions required, signed by the responsible engineer and suitable for utility and regulatory scrutiny.
