Insulated EWP Inspection & Dielectric Certification
Engineering inspection and dielectric testing of insulated EWPs, the electrically rated booms used for live-line and near-energised utility work.
Insulated EWPs are boom-type platforms built with an insulated boom section, and often an insulated platform liner, so that workers can operate safely near or on energised electrical assets. Beyond the usual mechanical inspection, these machines demand dielectric testing to confirm the insulation still provides its rated protection, which is the added dimension our engineers bring to their certification.
Dielectric integrity is the defining requirement
The whole purpose of an insulated EWP is to provide a rated barrier between the worker and an energised conductor. That barrier degrades with contamination, surface tracking, cracks and moisture ingress, none of which are always visible. Dielectric testing applies a controlled voltage across the insulated section and measures leakage current, confirming the boom still meets its rated voltage class.
We inspect the insulated boom and any platform liner for surface damage and contamination first, then carry out the dielectric test and record the result against the machine's rating, with a clear retest due date.
Mechanical inspection is unchanged
An insulated EWP is still a boom-type EWP, so the full mechanical inspection of boom structure, pins, slew ring, hydraulics, outriggers and platform applies exactly as it would for a standard unit. The dielectric testing is an addition to that scope, not a substitute for it.
Certification and records for utility fleets
Utilities and line contractors must be able to demonstrate the electrical rating of every insulated unit at any time. Our report records the mechanical inspection outcome, the dielectric test result and the voltage class, and we consolidate these for fleet operators so retest dates are never missed.
