Dielectric testing is the technique of applying controlled test voltages to an insulating component to measure how well it resists electrical current. On insulated EWPs it is the method underpinning insulation testing, and it is also applied to insulating liners, platforms and tools. By quantifying leakage and breakdown behaviour, dielectric testing turns the safety-critical assumption of insulation into a measured, documented performance figure.
What dielectric testing measures
Dielectric testing applies a defined test voltage across an insulating section and measures the leakage current that flows, and in some regimes the voltage at which breakdown would occur. The result quantifies the insulation's condition against the performance its rating requires.
Contamination, moisture and surface tracking all increase leakage, so the test is sensitive to exactly the degradation mechanisms that make insulation unreliable in service.
