Cherry picker is the common name for a boom-type elevating work platform, whether truck-mounted, trailer-mounted or self-propelled. Because the term covers a broad family of machines, our inspection is tailored to the specific configuration in front of us, while always applying the same core requirements of AS 1418.10 for design and AS 2550.10 for safe use and inspection.
What a cherry picker inspection covers
A cherry picker inspection confirms that the boom, hydraulics, platform and safety devices are all fit for continued service. We function-test every control, verify that the emergency lowering system works under load, and check the boom structure for the fatigue cracking that develops around pins and weld toes over years of cycling.
The platform and its edge protection receive particular attention, since this is where the operator stands. Guardrails, toe boards, gate latching and the harness anchorage are all checked against the requirements for fall protection.
Standards and inspection intervals
AS 2550.10 sets the framework for the safe use and inspection of boom-type EWPs, requiring a competent-person inspection at least annually and a major inspection at ten years. The design of the machine is governed by AS 1418.10, and any repair we specify is referenced back to that design intent.
Where the cherry picker is used in a high-cycle or corrosive environment, we may recommend more frequent inspection than the minimum, based on the observed condition and duty.
Reporting and certification
Each inspection is documented in a signed report and recorded in the machine's log book, with a clear pass, conditional or fail outcome. Any defect is listed with a recommended rectification timeframe so the operator has a defensible record of the machine's condition.
