Engineering inspection of tracked spider lifts, the compact crawler-mounted booms that deploy outriggers to reach height in tight or delicate environments.
Spider lifts are lightweight, tracked elevating work platforms with a compact footprint and a set of deployable outriggers that create a stable base for a surprisingly tall boom. Their low ground pressure and narrow width make them ideal for indoor atriums, heritage buildings, arboriculture and other access-restricted work, but the outrigger and interlock systems are central to their safety and to our inspection.
Outriggers and interlocks are the safety foundation
A spider lift is only stable once its outriggers are correctly deployed, so the interlock that prevents the boom from elevating until the legs are set and the machine is level is the single most important safety system we verify. We check each outrigger leg, foot and jack for wear and hydraulic leaks, confirm the automatic levelling operates, and test that the machine will not elevate on an out-of-level or improperly set base.
Ground-bearing feet and their pads are inspected too, since spider lifts often work on floors and surfaces where a leg punching through would be catastrophic.
Tracks, boom and power system
The rubber tracks and track drive are checked for wear and tension, and the slope-travel limits that keep the compact machine stable while tramming are verified. The boom, pins, jib and slew ring are inspected as on any boom-type EWP.
Many spider lifts offer dual power, running on an engine outdoors and a battery indoors. We assess whichever power systems are fitted and confirm the emergency descent operates independently of the primary power source.
Certification and intervals
Annual competent-person inspection and a ten-year major inspection apply under AS 2550.10. Because spider lifts frequently work indoors and over sensitive surfaces, our report pays particular attention to outrigger integrity and the leg-deployment interlocks.
