Structural Assessment

Engineering evaluation of a machine's structural integrity, fatigue condition and fitness to continue in service.

Structural assessment is the engineering evaluation of whether a machine's load-bearing structure remains fit for service. It combines inspection, NDT and, where required, calculation to reach a reasoned judgement on integrity, fatigue condition and remaining life. Owners commission structural assessments for ageing machines, after damage or overload, before purchase, or when a machine's history is uncertain and confidence in its structure must be re-established.

What a structural assessment involves

We examine the primary load path of the machine, its booms, chassis, turntable, connections and welds, using visual inspection and targeted NDT to detect cracking, corrosion and deformation. Where the question demands it, we assess remaining wall thickness against design minimums and consider the accumulated fatigue the structure has experienced.

The assessment is framed around a specific question: is the machine fit to continue, what is limiting its life, or is a repair adequate. The answer is supported by the evidence gathered and stated with any conditions.

  • Examination of the primary load path and connections
  • Targeted NDT for cracking and corrosion
  • Wall-thickness and deformation assessment against design
  • Reasoned conclusion on fitness and remaining life

When it is needed

Structural assessment is commissioned for ageing fleets, after an overload or impact, before purchasing a used machine, and whenever a machine's documented history is incomplete. It is also a component of major inspection and failure investigation.

The deliverable

You receive a signed engineering assessment stating the structure's condition, any limitations and the basis for the conclusion, suitable for owners, insurers and regulators.
