Telescopic Boom Lift Inspection & Certification
Engineering inspection of telescopic straight-boom lifts, focusing on the sliding boom sections, wear pads and the high reach that defines these machines.
Telescopic boom lifts use nested boom sections that extend in a straight line to deliver the greatest horizontal and vertical reach of any self-propelled EWP. The sliding sections rely on wear pads and a robust extension mechanism, and it is these components, along with the slew ring, that drive the focus of a telescopic boom inspection.
Sliding sections and wear pads
The defining feature of a telescopic boom is its nested sliding sections. Worn or displaced wear pads allow the sections to move within each other, which accelerates wear on the boom skins and changes how the boom deflects under load. We check wear pad thickness and adjustment, and inspect the section surfaces for scoring and the extension mechanism for correct operation.
Because the boom is long and slender at full extension, we also examine it for any permanent set or distortion that would indicate an overload event in its history.
Slew ring, sensing and the load chart
At full reach a telescopic boom applies a large overturning moment, so the slew ring and the sensing that governs the load chart are critical. We measure slew ring tilt, verify boom length and angle sensing, and confirm the overload and moment-limiting functions restrict operation in line with the rated load chart.
A legible, correct load chart on the machine is part of the certification, since operators depend on it to stay within the safe envelope at any given reach.
Certification and intervals
Annual competent-person inspection and a ten-year major inspection apply under AS 2550.10. Our report records wear pad condition, slew ring tilt and the results of any non-destructive testing, and states the certification outcome for continued service.
