Dye penetrant testing is a simple, versatile method for finding surface-breaking cracks in any non-porous material. A coloured or fluorescent dye is drawn into a crack by capillary action, then drawn back out onto a developer to form a visible indication. Because it does not rely on magnetism, it works on aluminium and other non-ferrous materials where magnetic particle inspection cannot, making it valuable on the lightweight structures of some access equipment.
How dye penetrant testing works
The surface is cleaned and a low-viscosity penetrant applied, which seeps into any surface-breaking defect. After a dwell time the excess is removed and a developer draws the trapped penetrant back to the surface, where it bleeds out to reveal the flaw as a clear indication.
The method finds only defects open to the surface, but for those it is highly reliable and works regardless of whether the material is magnetic.
