Trailer-mounted EWPs are towable boom lifts that are positioned by vehicle and then stabilised on outriggers before the boom is raised. Popular with councils, signage contractors and facilities teams for their low cost and easy transport, they combine an EWP with a road trailer, so both the lifting structure and the trailer running gear fall within our inspection.
Two machines in one
A trailer-mounted EWP is both a lifting device and a road trailer, and our inspection reflects that. On the EWP side we examine the boom, pins, slew ring and hydraulics; on the trailer side we check the drawbar, coupling, axles, suspension and brakes, because a defect in the running gear affects how safely the unit can be moved to site.
The outrigger system links the two: the trailer must be levelled and the outriggers set before the boom will elevate, and we verify that interlock closely.
Stability and descent
With a light trailer base, these machines rely entirely on their outriggers for stability. We check each leg, jack and foot, confirm the automatic or manual levelling, and test that the elevate function is locked out until the base is correctly set and level.
The emergency or manual descent is verified so an operator can be brought down if the primary power fails.
Intervals and certification
Annual competent-person inspection and a ten-year major inspection apply under AS 2550.10. Our report covers both the EWP structure and the trailer running gear, and states the certification outcome.
