Tower Crane Inspection & Certification

Engineering inspection and certification of tower cranes, covering the mast, slewing unit, jib, hoist and the tie-ins that anchor the crane to the structure.

Tower cranes dominate the skyline of major construction projects, lifting materials to great heights over extended durations. Their fixed or climbing mast, slewing unit and long jib are erected on site and often tied into the building as it rises, so their inspection covers not only the crane itself but the way it is founded and anchored. This page describes how our engineers assess and certify tower cranes under AS 1418.4 and AS 2550.4.

Mast, foundation and tie-ins

The mast carries the entire crane load down to the foundation, so its sections, the connection bolts or pins between them, and the base anchoring are safety critical. We inspect these connections and, where the crane is tied into the structure, examine the tie-in collars and their fixings, since these anchor the tall mast against wind and lifting loads.

Tower cranes remain in one position for long periods and are exposed to weather, so corrosion and bolt condition receive careful attention.

Slew, jib and hoist

The slewing unit, slew ring and counter-jib with its counterweight are inspected as the rotating heart of the crane, and the jib structure, trolley or luffing mechanism is examined for cracking, distortion and wear. The hoist ropes, drums, brakes and hook block are checked as the direct link to the load, with non-destructive testing applied where duty and age warrant.

Safety devices and certification

Tower cranes rely on load-moment limiters, hoist and trolley limits, anti-collision systems where multiple cranes operate, and wind monitoring. We function-test these safeguards and document their operation. Periodic inspection and a major inspection apply under AS 2550.4, and our report records the structural, mechanical and safety-device findings and the certification outcome.
