Self-Propelled Boom Inspection & Certification

Engineering inspection of self-propelled boom lifts, the mobile articulating or telescopic booms driven and operated from the platform.

A self-propelled boom lift is a mobile EWP that drives on its own wheels or tracks and is operated from the platform, combining height, outreach and the ability to reposition while elevated. Whether articulating or telescopic, these machines are inspected as an integrated system of boom, turntable, drive base and safety interlocks under AS 1418.10 and AS 2550.10.

Driven while elevated

The defining feature of a self-propelled boom is that it is driven from the platform, often while elevated. This makes the drive base, tilt sensing and the interlocks that manage drive speed and function with the boom raised safety critical. We function-test these systems and inspect the tyres or tracks, brakes and axles that keep the machine stable while tramming.

The boom, slew ring and turntable are inspected as on any boom-type EWP, following the load path from platform to base.

Hydraulics and emergency power

The hydraulic system is pressure-tested and cylinders checked for drift, with holding valves verified so the boom holds position if a hose fails. The auxiliary power unit or emergency descent is tested to confirm an operator can be brought down if the primary system fails, in whatever boom position the machine is typically used.

Intervals and certification

Annual competent-person inspection and a ten-year major inspection apply under AS 2550.10. Our report documents the boom, slew, drive and interlock findings and states the certification outcome.
