Overhead Crane Inspection & Certification

Engineering inspection and certification of overhead bridge cranes, covering the runway, bridge structure, hoist, controls and safety systems.

Overhead cranes, also called bridge cranes, run on elevated runway beams and carry a hoist along a bridge that spans a workshop or process bay. Fixed to the building structure and often working many cycles a day, they are central to manufacturing and heavy maintenance, and their inspection covers the supporting runway, the bridge and end-carriages, and the hoisting and control systems.

Runway and building interface

An overhead crane depends on the runway beams and their fixings to the building structure to carry every load safely to ground. We inspect the runway rails, end stops and support brackets, check the fixings and connections to the structure, and look for signs of overload such as runway deflection or distortion.

Because the crane and building act together, any modification to either can affect the crane's safe operation, which is why the structural interface is part of the inspection.

Bridge, hoist and controls

The bridge girders, end-carriages, travel wheels and drives are inspected for wear and cracking, and the hoist unit, its rope or chain, drum or sprockets, brakes and hook block are examined as the direct lifting path. Controls, whether pendant, radio or cabin, are function-tested along with the travel and hoist limit switches and the overload protection.

Load testing and certification

Load testing confirms the crane and its overload protection perform at rated capacity, and periodic inspection applies under AS 2550.3. Our report records the runway, bridge, hoist and control findings, the load-test result and the certification outcome, giving the operator a clear record for continued service.
