HIAB is a leading brand of vehicle loading crane, and the name has become shorthand for the articulated knuckle-boom cranes mounted behind a truck cab or on a tray. Whatever the make, these cranes are inspected and certified under AS 1418.11 and AS 2550.11, with the articulated boom, hydraulics and stabilisers as the focus of the assessment.
What we inspect on a HIAB crane
The articulated boom with its knuckle and hydraulic extension sections is the defining structure, and it carries the highest loads at its pins and cylinders. We inspect each boom section, the knuckle and the extensions for cracking, wear and distortion, and examine every pin and bush for the clearances that indicate wear.
The hydraulic holding valves are checked to confirm the boom holds position if a hose fails, and the slew mechanism and column base are inspected as the crane's rotational foundation.
Stabilisers and mounting
A HIAB's rated capacity depends on its stabilisers being properly set on adequate ground, so we inspect the legs, feet and deployment interlocks and confirm the load-limiting system reflects the stabiliser configuration. The crane's mounting to the truck subframe is checked, as this connection carries every lift into the vehicle.
Load testing and certification
Load testing confirms the crane and its overload protection perform correctly at rated capacity, and periodic and major inspections apply under AS 2550.11. Our report records the results and the certification outcome, with any defects listed for rectification.
