A gantry crane carries a bridge and hoist on its own supporting legs, running on rails or wheels at ground level rather than on an elevated runway. From small adjustable portable gantries to large rail-mounted container and yard cranes, these machines stand on their own structure, so leg stability, the travel path and the bridge form the core of their inspection.
Legs and stability
Because a gantry crane stands on its own legs, the leg structure, cross-braces, feet and connections determine its stability. We inspect these members for cracking, distortion and corrosion, and on adjustable or portable gantries we check the locking devices and adjustment mechanisms that must be secured before use.
The running surface and travel path matter too, since an uneven or damaged floor or rail can compromise stability while the crane travels under load.
Travel, bridge and hoist
The wheels, castors or rail bogies, the travel drive and the bridge girder and end-carriages are inspected for wear and correct operation. The hoist unit, its rope or chain, brakes and hook block are examined as the lifting path, and the controls, limit switches and overload protection are function-tested.
Load testing and certification
Load testing confirms the gantry and its overload protection perform at rated capacity, and periodic inspection applies under the AS 2550 crane series. Our report records the leg, travel, bridge and hoist findings and the certification outcome.
