Engineering inspection and certification of crawler cranes, the track-mounted lattice or telescopic cranes used for heavy lifting and long-duration site work.
Crawler cranes are track-mounted lifting machines, usually with a lattice boom, that can travel and lift on their tracks without outriggers and handle very heavy loads over long durations. Their broad tracked base gives stability and mobility on prepared ground, and their lattice boom can be assembled to great lengths, so the boom connections, tracks and slew system are the focus of our inspection.
Lattice boom and connections
The lattice boom is assembled from sections whose chords, lacings and connection pins carry all lifting loads, so any distortion, corrosion or cracking at these members is significant. We inspect the boom-foot, each section and its connections, and apply non-destructive testing to critical pins and welds where the crane's age or duty warrants.
Because lattice booms can be reconfigured to different lengths and with luffing jibs, we confirm the load-moment system reflects the configuration in use.
Tracks, slew and hoist
The tracked base provides the crane's stability, so the track frames, rollers, pads and drive are inspected along with the tracked structure. The slew ring, slew drive, superstructure and counterweight are checked as the rotating foundation, and the hoist ropes, drums, brakes and hook block are examined as the link to the load.
Safety devices and certification
The load-moment limiter, boom-angle sensing and hoist limits are function-tested, and load testing verifies performance at rated capacity. Periodic and major inspections apply under AS 2550.5, with our report documenting the structural, mechanical and safety-device findings and the certification outcome.
