The EWP Annual Inspection Checklist
The annual inspection keeps an EWP compliant between major inspections. This checklist explains what a competent person looks for each year.
Between the deep dive of a major inspection and the daily pre-start checks sits the annual inspection: a structured, documented examination carried out by a competent person once every twelve months. It is required under AS 2550.10 and is the routine that keeps most EWPs lawfully in service year to year. It is not a teardown, but it is far more rigorous than an operator walk-around. This checklist sets out the areas a professional inspection covers.
Structure and visible condition
The inspection starts with the structure. The chassis, boom sections, turntable, platform and mounting points are examined for cracking, corrosion, deformation and damaged welds. The inspector pays particular attention to high-stress areas such as boom pivots, cylinder mountings and the platform attachment, where fatigue tends to appear first.
Pins, bushes and wear pads are checked for excessive play, and any prior repairs are assessed. Where visual signs suggest a hidden defect, the inspector may recommend targeted non-destructive testing rather than waiting for the next major inspection.
Hydraulics, controls and interlocks
The hydraulic system is checked for leaks, hose condition, cylinder creep and correct operation of holding valves. The inspector then works through the control systems: platform and ground controls, deadman devices, emergency stop, emergency lowering, and any tilt or overload sensing.
Every safety interlock is tested to confirm it functions as designed. A machine that elevates perfectly but has a defeated tilt alarm or an inoperative emergency lowering system is not compliant, and these functional faults are among the most common findings.

Documentation and the outcome
The inspector reviews the log book and service history, confirms that routine servicing has been done, and checks that compliance and rating plates are present and legible. Any defects are recorded with a clear indication of whether they must be fixed before use or monitored.
The annual inspection produces a dated, signed record and updates the log book. If the machine passes, it is cleared for a further twelve months; if defects are found, they are itemised so the owner can rectify them and have the machine re-checked.
